What to do if you are in a motor vehicle accident.

Getting into an auto accident is a traumatic and often life changing event. Although never an easy experience, there are a number of actions you can take to ensure the most beneficial outcome possible. Please review the following checklist and keep this information in case you, a friend, or loved one is involved in an auto accident.

  • Stay calm
  • If possible, exchange information, including the other driver’s name, address and phone numbers.
  • Notify the police and make sure a police report is completed. Call an ambulance if necessary.
  • Seek medical treatment. No bruise or scrape can be too small. Even the slightest injury to the untrained eye can be a serious medical issue that must be addressed as quickly as possible.
  • Notify your insurance carrier. Many people are unaware that insurance companies don’t have an obligation to pay benefits to their customers if too much time elapses between the accident and notification.
  • Note any potential witnesses to the accident. Get their names and addresses or phone numbers if possible.
  • Take pictures of your automobile and the other cars involved in the accident if possible.
  • Keep track of all paperwork involving the accident, including police reports, repair orders, and medical records.
