Incident Information

Early Sunday morning around 2 am, two collisions on I-696 caused several people to sustain injuries in Warren. According to the Michigan State Police, troopers were on their way to the scene of a prior car crash when a Dodge Challenger collided with a car that was involved in the previous accident. The driver of a Chevy Equinox initiated the first crash by hitting a Dodge Caliber, which then resulted in the Caliber overturning. During the chaos that ensued, the Equinox came to a stop in the middle of the freeway. Following the crash, the Equinox driver promptly left the car and went to check on the Caliber driver.

The Dodge Challenger, allegedly driving at unbelievable speeds of over 100 mph, collided with a Chevrolet Equinox after the driver had exited the vehicle. The impact was so severe that it caused the Equinox to be cut in half and catch fire along with the Challenger. Reports from the scene indicate that the driver of the Challenger, a 19-year-old male, had suffered a head injury and is currently in serious condition at a local hospital. The incident also left the passengers of the Challenger with severe injuries. The front seat passenger was transported to a hospital and is listed in critical condition due to chest injuries while the rear seat passenger suffered rib injuries and was also admitted to a local hospital in serious condition. The driver of the Caliber, involved in the first crash, incurred only minor injuries.

Speeding can have severe consequences and can lead to accidents that cause traumatic injuries or even result in death. The dangers of engaging in risky driving behaviors, such as driving over the speed limit, cannot be understated. The current situation at hand is no exception. Two crashes have occurred, and while no other injuries were reported, the investigation is ongoing. Lt. Mike Shaw expresses that with responsible driving practices, such accidents can be avoided, and the safety of all drivers on the road can be ensured. The aim should be to prevent such occurrences and create a safer environment for everyone.
