Incident Information

Friday, Jan. 27 has left the Delta County community in shock and mourning following a multi-vehicle crash on US-2 that resulted in two deaths and one person being injured. All three vehicles involved, including two SUVs traveling eastbound and a semi-truck heading westbound, were located near Fishdam River when the tragedy occurred. Michigan State Police soon responded to the scene with multiple EMS agencies providing aid to those affected. While the cause of the crash remains unclear, authorities say that the semi-truck lost control while drifting towards the north side of US-2 and attempted to correct course by steering south but unintentionally crossed over into the eastbound lane, colliding head-on with an SUV as a result.

Gerald and Tara Weaver of Escanaba, MI, were sadly pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the second SUV, a 38-year-old man from Oshkosh, WI, was pinned inside the vehicle and had to be removed via extrication by responders. Reports say that he suffered multiple broken bones as a result of the crash. What’s worse is two additional vehicles were involved in subsequent crashes that occurred as drivers tried to abruptly stop.

Representing the MSP (Michigan State Police) were troopers from the Gladstone Post and Manistique Outpost, alongside Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers from the St. Ignace Post. The Delta County Sheriff’s Dept., DNR (Department of Natural Resources), Rampart EMS, Manistique EMS, Inwood Township Fire/EMS, Thompson Township Fire, Nahma Township Fire, Garden Township Fire as well as Gene’s Towing and the Delta County Road Commission came together to provide assistance.
