Incident Information

Tragedy struck on a Michigan highway early one morning as a drunk driver careened down the wrong side of I-696, crashing into two cars and killing a fellow driver. The horrifying incident was first reported to the Michigan State Police around 4 a.m., with witnesses sharing that a Jeep Liberty was moving in an eastward direction amidst the westbound lanes of the interstate near the I-94 intersection in Roseville. The driver, Stephano Ramon Nabors, is accused of causing the first accident near Couzens Road, resulting in another vehicle overturning. Nabors was not deterred by the chaos he caused and continued driving the wrong way, nearly hitting a patrol car upon entering I-696 at Groesbeck Highway.

The tragic results are a reminder of the dangers that drunk driving can cause and the need for responsible decision-making. Troopers followed the Liberty east in the westbound lanes of I-696 until it crashed head-on with a Chevrolet SUV in the left lane, killing the 62-year-old Harper Woods man driving the SUV.

Meanwhile, the driver of the Liberty, Nabors, sustained a broken toe, and police officers suspected intoxication from both him and his passenger. As state officials continue to investigate the cause of the crash, Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw urges drivers to make responsible decisions on the road, with a reminder to slow down, avoid distractions, and refrain from driving impaired. Peter Lucido, Macomb County Prosecutor, expressed gratitude to the Michigan State Police for their bravery in stopping the impaired driver. It's a sobering reminder to all of us to stay alert behind the wheel.

The tragic loss of life that occurred due to the defendant's reckless behavior is devastating. Getting behind the wheel while under the influence of alcohol is a decision that can have dire and deadly consequences. This was exemplified when Nabors decided to drive the wrong way on I-696, showing a complete disregard for the safety of others on the road. The charges against Nabors are severe, with second-degree murder carrying a life sentence and the others each carrying a 15-year sentence. The $1 million bond, cash/surety, no 10% given at the arraignment on Monday morning speaks to the severity of the situation. A probable cause conference is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 17, and a preliminary examination is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. May 24.
