Incident Information

Tragedy struck on Sunday near the Detroit-Hamtramck border as two people lost their lives in a terrible accident on the northbound side of I-75. An EMS driver, who had just finished his run, pulled over to assist a woman who had been in a car accident and was walking along the freeway. The EMS driver was trying to help the injured woman when another driver lost control of their vehicle, hitting both the EMS worker and the woman. Sadly, the woman, a resident of Oak Park, lost her life on the scene of the accident, while the EMS worker, only 38 years old and an employee of Superior Ambulance, was rushed to the hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Mary Franco, the VP of this particular company expressed her grief over the incident. She stated that they were devastated by the loss of their employee and that they couldn't comment anymore until the investigation was completed out of respect for his family. This tragic event serves as a reminder of the importance of following Move Over laws. Darnell Blackburn, Local 4's Crime and Safety Expert emphasized just how vital these laws are. Lives are at risk not only for those broken down on the side of the road, but also for emergency services persons and even the everyday driver. Blackburn stressed that it's not enough to just move to the next lane, you need to heed the warnings and move over to prevent tragedy from striking again.

Michigan officials are echoing a critical message for drivers: Move Over. When you see an emergency vehicle with its lights on, slow down and move to the side. It might be that simple to avoid a tragedy like the recent accident that struck two troopers, killing one and injuring the other. While it remains uncertain whether the 58-year-old driver involved in the crash will face charges or not, one thing is clear, and that is the importance of safety on the road.
