Incident Information
Tragedy struck in Van Buren County on Friday around 12:22 p.m. when a car crash on M-40 left a 1-year-old child fighting for their life and a 5-year-old seriously injured.
According to news reports, as traffic was slowing down for a northbound vehicle to turn, a Chevrolet Colorado failed to stop in time and rear ended a Toyota Highlander causing significant damage to both vehicles. It was stated that the two children were both safely secured in child-restraint seats when the terrible accident occurred.
Emergency Medical Services arrived quickly on the scene and both kids along with a 60-year-old female who was identified as the driver of the Chevy Colorado, were transported to Bronson Methodist Hospital immediately.
Although the 5-year-old was fortunate to be treated and released with just a broken collarbone, the 60-year-old female was not as lucky. She remained hospitalized following the surgery, but the most devastating news came later on Saturday when the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office solemnly announced midday that the 1-year-old child had passed away, an unexpected and unimaginable loss for the children’s mother and all family involved.
Unfortunately, the deputies that were called to the scene to investigate the cause of the wreck were left with more questions than answers. It's unclear what caused the accident. Speed, drugs, or alcohol have yet to be ruled out at this time. The Michigan State Police have created a crash reconstruction that can provide a clear picture of what happened and who was at fault. As the investigation continues, all we can do is hope for the best for the victims and our sincerest condolences go out to the family of the 1-year-old, who tragically lost their precious little one. No words can truly express the sorrow felt at a time like this, but we want the family to know that they are in our thoughts and prayers.
