Midland County has a number of busy streets, highways and roadways. From Saginaw Street to Main Street, US 10 to M20, county roadways are busy with cars, SUVS, pickup trucks and commercial trucks transporting people and things to various places. However, like other counties in Michigan, Midland County is not without its car crashes. In fact, according to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, the number of motor vehicle accidents in Midland County has been increasing over the past few years.

In 2016, there were a total of 2,672 motor vehicle crashes. This is the highest number of Midland County car accidents in more than five years. These crashes include accidents involving passenger cars, SUVS, pick-up trucks, and motorcycles. In 2016 there were a total of 544 injuries with 3 fatalities.

78% of the crashes involved passenger cars and SUVs. However, more than 16% involved pick-up trucks. Less than 1% of total crashes involved motorcycles, but motorcycles made up 3.5% of all injuries. The highest number of car crashes occurred during the month of November.

Amazingly, 948 car, truck and motorcycle crashes involved deer. This amount represents more than 35% of all crashes in Midland County for the year.

Naturally, the city of Midland had the most number of car accidents, with 1,273 crashes. Midland also had the most number of injuries with 254. Lee Township had the second most number of crashes in Midland County with 153. Warren Township had the third most number of car accidents with 115.

Like everywhere else, Midland County had its fair share of alcohol related car accidents in 2016. There was a total of 77 drivers involved in alcohol related crashes.

The reasons for crashes varied, but “unable to stop in an assured clear distance” and “failure to yield” were the two most popular citations for at-fault vehicle crashes in Midland County. Speeding was actually a distant third.
