Want to Spend a Fun Day With Your 4-Legged Pal? Here are 5 Places You Should Check Out

Dequindre Cut Greenway

The Dequindre Cut Greenway is a 2-mile urban recreational path that runs parallel to St. Aubin Street, between Mack Avenue and Atwater Street, just north of the riverfront. Recently, a half-mile extension of the greenway was added from Gratiot Avenue to Mack Avenue, taking cyclists and pedestrians into the heart of Eastern Market.

You and your doggo can take a peaceful walk or run on the path while admiring the urban artwork and graffiti that the Dequindre Cut is known for. Or enjoy a leisurely bike ride on the 20-foot-wide paved pathway, which includes separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists. This is a great place for your doggo to chase squirrels (only on a leash, of course).

Stony Creek Metropark

Covering over 4,000 acres, Stony Creek Metropark has a vast number of trails that your good dog will love. The park is in Washington Township, Rochester/Oakland, and with a small portion in Shelby Township. The lush woodlands and serene wetlands allow you to get that “up north” feeling without ever having to leave Metro Detroit.

Featuring a nature center, disc-golf course, grills, golf course, playgrounds, and much more, Stony Creek offers outdoor recreation all year long. The park is a busy hub of activity and makes for a great place to meet other doggos!

PetSmart P.U.P.’s Detroit Dog Park

A group of dog owners, along with the help of PetSmart, have transformed vacant land in between neighborhoods into a dog park in Detroit’s historic Corktown neighborhood. The Detroit Dog Park, a non-profit organization, saw their vision of an off-leash dog park in Detroit actualized in 2014.

Located adjacent to the Michigan Central Station, dogs and their owners can enjoy a fenced-in area with grass, benches, and a shared space to socialize. The park is free and does not require membership or key cards.

Dodge Park

Dodge Park is a recreation and sports park located in Sterling Heights that is dog-friendly and great for family and friends of all ages. The park features a beautiful, scenic trail system along the Clinton River that’s perfect for walking, running, biking, and rollerblading, and of course, letting Fido enjoy the great outdoors.

Some parts of Dodge Park are currently undergoing renovation to allow for the construction of an ice rink, farmers market pavilion, facilities for canoe and kayak enthusiasts, and many more aesthetic improvements. And most importantly for your canine sidekick, a new dog park where you can enjoy some off-leash time together!

Belle Isle Park

Full of natural beauty and rich with history, Belle Isle is Detroit’s famous island park on the Detroit River. Featuring a conservatory, boat house, aquarium, picnic areas, a nature zoo and more, visiting Belle Isle can certainly be an all-day adventure. There’s something there for everyone.

Just a few minutes outside of the city, Belle Isle is a great place for your dog to visit year-round – lots of trails and grassy areas to enjoy when it’s cold, and plenty of water to swim in during the summer months. And if you’re walking your dog to the park, entry is free!
