Incident Information

Early Friday morning a woman who was later identified as Janice Bauer, was fatally struck by a bus while walking in a crosswalk on her way to work. According to the Detroit Police Department, the bus had stopped to make a turn before hitting the victim, who was walking in the same direction. Sadly, there were no eyewitnesses to the accident, leaving authorities with the challenge of piecing together what happened using surveillance footage from nearby cameras. While the incident occurred near the Guardian Building in Downtown Detroit, the victim was on her way to work in the Buhl Building. Although the specific causes of the accident are still under investigation, it’s clear that this intersection has been a source of concern for some time.

Sharmon Anderson, who’s a frequent in the area, speaks volumes of the dangerous intersection that she’s been crossing for over 10 years. With a heavy heart, Anderson expresses her concerns about the inevitable tragedy that occurred at the notorious corner. “Accidents like these were bound to happen.” she exclaimed.

The intersection poses a significant threat to pedestrians and drivers alike, and Anderson reminds us of the importance of paying heed when crossing or making a left turn at the crossroads. One minute you’re on your routine walk, and the next, you can find yourself in the middle of a tragedy waiting to happen.

According to sources, the driver involved in the tragedy had been involved in a similar accident a few years back in 2015, which resulted in a lawsuit settlement for over a million dollars. This raises serious questions about the protocols in place for retraining and monitoring drivers who have been involved in accidents, especially those that have resulted in fatalities.

The news of Janice Bauer’s passing has deeply affected the SMART community where she was employed. Bauer had been an integral part of the ADA Program Coordinator team for a remarkable decade, and her dedication and passion had made a meaningful impact on the organization. The statement released on Friday afternoon by SMART not only confirmed her identity as the victim, but also expressed the overwhelming grief and shock felt by the organization. It is a stark reminder of how much one person can impact an entire community, and Janice Bauer will undoubtedly be remembered as a beloved member of the SMART family.

The safety and well-being of passengers and other road users must be a top priority, and it is crucial that we take a closer look at how we can ensure that incidents like these do not happen again in the future.
